This afternoon we depart from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on a non-stop Lufthansa German Airlines overnight flight to Frankfurt, Germany. (I)
Tues., Dec. 1 - FRANKFURT / TRIER
As the sun rises over the Rhine River, we arrive in Frankfurt, Germany, where we meet our Tour Manager and board our private motor coach. We travel through the scenic Rhine River Valley en route to Trier. We arrive in Trier and check into our hotel this afternoon. Dinner is included at our hotel this evening. (I,D)
Wed., Dec. 2 - TRIER
Step back in time this morning as we meet our local guide for an engaging orientation walking tour of Trier’s Treasures, Germany’s oldest city. Highlights include the awe-inspiring Porta Nigra, the lively Hauptmarkt, and two UNESCO World Heritage sites - the Cathedral of St. Peter and the elegant Liebfrauen-kirche. The afternoon is yours to soak up the festive spirit at the Trier Christmas Market, widely regarded as one of Germany’s most atmospheric. Wander among twinkling stalls, breathe in the scent of pine and spices, and savor seasonal delights such as Glühwein, Reibeku-chen (traditional potato cakes), and freshly baked gin-gerbread. (B)
Thurs., Dec. 3 - TRIER (Luxembourg City)
Today we cross the border into the charming Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for a delightful exploration of Luxembourg City. Discover the city’s most celebrated landmarks, including Place d’Armes, Guillaume II Square, Clairefontaine Square, and the stately Grand Duke’s Palace. A guided walk through the picturesque Old Town reveals centuries of history and breathtaking vistas from the legendary Chemin de la Corniche, often called “Europe’s most beautiful balcony.” Learn about the city’s formidable fortress while enjoying panoramic views of the valley below. The afternoon is free to browse the enchanting Luxembourg City Christmas Market before returning to our hotel in the late after-noon. (B)
Fri., Dec. 4 - TRIER / HEIDELBERG
Today we depart Trier and journey to the Rhine River Valley, where we board a scenic cruise through the spectacular Rhine Gorge - home to more castles than anywhere else in Europe. Following our cruise, we visit the delightful wine village of Rüdesheim, famous for its charming Drosselgasse. From Rüdesheim, we continue into the Neckar River Valley to Heidelberg. Known as Germany’s most romantic city, Heidelberg has long inspired painters and poets with its timeless beauty. This evening, enjoy dinner at our hotel. (B,D)
Sat., Dec. 5 - HEIDELBERG
This morning we begin with a walking tour of Heidelberg’s Old Town. On our walking tour of Heidel-berg’s Altstadt, we will stroll around the charming “Old Town” with its atmospheric old buildings and fascinat-ing history. Starting at the University Square, we will learn about the origins of Heidelberg University, the oldest in Germany, dating back to 1386. Then we will visit the notorious ‘Student Prison,’ where misbehaving students were locked up as punishment. Here we can also enjoy the University Museum and see the very old hall, ‘Alte Aula’, where the university graduations take place. Then it’s on to see the Jesuit Church, the main Catholic church in town, followed by the Heilige Geist Protestant church in the bustling Market Square. From here it’s just a short walk down to the Neckar River to see the iconic Old Bridge and enjoy the wonderful view of the valley and castle. The afternoon is at leisure to visit the Heidelberg Christmas Market. (B)
Sun., Dec. 6 - HEIDELBERG
Today we visit Heidelberg Castle, the iconic red-sandstone ruin that rises majestically above the city, offering sweeping views over the Neckar River. Our guided visit takes us on a journey through centuries of history as we explore the castle’s evocative ruins, mar-vel at the enormous Great Wine Barrel (Großes Fass), and visit the fascinating German Pharmacy Museum. After our tour, we descend by funicular to Heidelberg’s charming Old Town. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore this romantic city at your own pace - stroll the historic streets, enjoy a café, or shop for local treasures. (B)
Mon., Dec. 7 - HEIDELBERG / LUCERNE (Strasbourg)
This morning we cross the Rhine River into France to visit Strasbourg. Enjoy a guided walking tour of the Old Town, including the magnificent Gothic Cathedral with its soaring spire, stained-glass windows, and famous astronomical clock. Stroll through charming streets and canals lined with historic half-timbered houses, part of Strasbourg’s UNESCO-listed city center. Free time is provided to visit the renowned Christmas Market before continuing south into Switzerland to the beautiful city of Lucerne. Dinner is included this evening at our hotel. (B,D)
Tues., Dec. 8 - LUCERNE
This morning, we will explore the charming Old Town of Lucerne. Stroll across the famous Chapel Bridge, admire the beautifully painted buildings, and take in the history and atmosphere of this picturesque city. We will also visit the Lion Monument, a poignant sculpture commemorating the Swiss Guards . The afternoon is free for you to enjoy at your leisure. Browse the boutiques of the Old Town, visit the renowned Bucherer shop in search of a special gift, or soak up the festive atmosphere at Lucerne’s Christmas Market. In the evening, we gather at the Stadtkeller restaurant, for a festive Swiss evening. In rustic, cozy surroundings, we will savor traditional Swiss cuisine while enjoying a lively Swiss folklore show, featuring yodeling, Alpine horn performances, and flag spinning, offering a delightful glimpse into Switzerland’s rich cultural heritage. Wed., Dec. 9 - LUCERNE / CHICAGO
This morning, we drive to Zurich International Airport to board our non-stop flight back to Chicago. It’s the perfect time to reflect on the unforgettable memories from our vacation—moments that will last a lifetime. (B,I)
